The pens and pencils you use in law school might not seem like a big deal. But, if you hand-write your notes (as you should) you’ll spend a lot of time holding your favorite writing utensil.
Best Law School Pens For Law Students
- Pens are better than pencils because they write faster and you don’t need to worry about readability.
- If you are concerned with erasing, don’t be. Law school lectures move quickly and you don’t have time to be erasing. However, if you are perfectionist and can’t stand mistakes we recommend a pen that is erasable. Check out #3 the Pilot FicXion Clicker.
- Use at least two different colored inks. One for your notes at home when reading and a different color for lecture notes. This way when you review your notes, you will know whether you wrote something down because the professor said it or because you thought of it while reading.
1. Stylus – Ballpoint Pen

These pens are the best pens for law school. One click to close and open them so you don’t have to worry about losing a cap. The ink and ballpoint is perfect. Not too inky, not too smudgy, just the right size for taking law school notes. The best part though is the stylus. The black tip on the end will work on any touch screen device. That means this thing can seamlessly transition from handwritten notes to tablet notes with one click.

2. Pilot G-Tec-C3

We promise you’ve never had a pen like this. These are micro fine point (0.3mm). This means you will have the most precise lettering on notes that you take with these. If you think you’ll never need to write small and precise, wait until you have your first open note law school exam that is limited to one cheat sheet. The Pilot G-Tec-C3 will allow you to make the ultimate cheat sheet for you law school exams because of how small and precise you can write with it. The ink dries immediately so you don’t have to worry about smudging half of your probable cause rule statement on your outline. If you get multiple colors, you can color code those cheat sheets as well.

3. FriXion Clicker

We love these pens because they are erasable. The end opposite of the tip has a ink eraser that creates friction and heat to cleanly erase anything you’ve written. These are great for when you’re brainstorming or even making notes within your book that you want to remove later. They write somewhat like gel pens. Just be careful, the ink disappears in the heat. So, if you leave your homework near the furnace, it will be gone by the time you get back.

4. Bic Cristal Extra Smooth

Bic Cristal xtra smooth is the old faithful like the brick phones of the early 2000s. You can do anything to these and they will keep on writing. Run it over with your car, drop it in the ocean, break part of it off and guess what? It’ll still write. We love buying a pack of black and a back of blue each year. Ten should last you two semesters accounting for all the writing you do and you’ll probably lose a couple.

5. Wordsworth & Black Fountain Pen

Fountain pens? You thought we were trying to stay within budget for law school? We are. And you need something that is a step up. This isn’t for taking notes. During your three years in law school, you will be asked to sign numerous things. You will have multiple job interviews. Do you want to be the candidate that whips out a chewed up library pen during your interview? No, you don’t. You’re on a journey to become a lawyer and you want to be treated and respected as such.
Small details like carrying a premium pen with you are noticed. We recommend a color besides black so that when you sign documents you will immediately recognize an original from a photocopy. This is also one of the better pens for lawyers. If you want a less flashy version, you can opt for the Pilot Metropolitan Fountain pen.
